1887-1948. German artist, a member of the Dada movement. He moved to Norway in 1937 and to England in 1940. From 1918 he developed a variation on collage, using discarded rubbish such as buttons and bus tickets to create pictures and structures. He called these art works Merz, and produced a magazine of the same name from 1923. Later he created Merzbau, extensive constructions of wood and scrap, most of which were destroyed.
