Extensive open tropical grasslands, with
scattered trees and shrubs. Savannas cover
large areas of Africa, North and South
America, and N Australia. The name was
originally given by Spaniards to the treeless
plains of the tropical South American
prairies. Most of North America's savannas
have been built over.
