1918- . English philanthropist, founder of
the hospice movement, which aims to provide a
caring and comfortable environment in which
people with terminal illnesses can die. She
was the medical director of St Christopher's
Hospice in Sydenham, S London, 1967-85, and
later became its chair. She wrote Care of the
Dying 1960.
