Industrial port (oil refining, distilling,
paper, tobacco, chemicals) in NW Yugoslavia;
population (1983) 193,044. It has changed
hands many times and, after being seized by
the Italian nationalist Gabriele d'Annunzio
1919, was annexed by Italy 1924. It was ceded
back to Yugoslavia 1949.
