1931- . US high-energy physicist who, in the 1960s, designed the Stanford Positron Accelerating Ring (SPEAR). In 1974 Richter used SPEAR to produce a new particle, later named the `psi' (psi) particle, thought to be formed from the charmed quark postulated by Sheldon Glashow. Richter shared the 1976 Nobel Physics Prize with Samuel Ting.
