1861-1909. US sculptor, painter, and
illustrator. His exploratory trips to the
American West inspired lively images of
cowboys and horses, such as his sculpture Off
the Range (Corcoran Gallery of Art,
Washington, DC) and his bronze Bronco Buster
1895, of which there are over 300 copies. His
illustrations were published in Harper's
Weekly. Later he became a war correspondent,
covering the Indian Wars of 1890-91 and the
Spanish-American War of 1898.
