Capital of Champagne-Ardenne region, France;
population (1982) 199,000. It is the centre
of the champagne industry and has textile
industries as well. It was known in Roman
times as Durocorturum. From 987 all but six
French kings were crowned here. Ceded to
England 1420 under the Treaty of Troyes, it
was retaken by Joan of Arc, who had Charles
VII consecrated in the 13th-century
cathedral. In World War II, the German High
Command formally surrendered here to US
general Eisenhower 7 May 1945.
