1840-1916. French Symbolist painter and
graphic artist. He used fantastic symbols and
images, sometimes mythological. From the
1890s he painted still lifes and landscapes.
His work was much admired by the Surrealists.
Redon initially worked mostly in black and
white, producing charcoal drawings and
lithographs, but from 1890, in oils and
pastels, he used colour in a way that
recalled the Impressionists. The head of
Orpheus is a recurring motif in his work.
Redon made his reputation as a Symbolist in
Paris around 1880.
