1892-1967. South African born British
character actor, one of the cinema's great
villains; he also played Sherlock Holmes (the
fictional detective created by Arthur Conan
Doyle) in several films. He worked mainly in
Hollywood, in films such as The Adventures of
Robin Hood 1938 and The Hound of the
Baskervilles 1939.
