1888-1974. US poet and critic, born in
Tennessee. He published his romantic but
antirhetorical verse in, for example, Poems
About God 1919, Chills and Fever 1924, and
Selected Verse 1947. As a critic and teacher
he was a powerful figure in the New Criticism
movement, which shaped much literary theory
from the 1940s to the 1960s.
