1756-1823. Scottish portrait painter, active
mainly in Edinburgh. He developed a technique
of painting with broad brushstrokes directly
on the canvas without preparatory drawing. He
was appointed painter to George IV 1823. The
Reverend Robert Walker Skating c. 1784
(National Gallery, Edinburgh) 1784 is
typical.
