1847-1917. US painter who developed one of
the most original styles of his time. He
painted with broad strokes that tended to
simplify form and used yellowish colours that
gave his works an eerie, haunted quality. His
works are poetic, romantic, and filled with
unreality; Death on a Pale Horse 1910
(Cleveland Museum of Art) is typical. Born in
New Bedford, Massachusetts, he was
self-taught and, as time passed, became more
and more a recluse.
