1619-1682. English Royalist general and admiral, born in Prague, son of the Elector Palatine Frederick V (1596-1632) and James I's daughter Elizabeth. Defeated by Cromwell at Marston Moor and Naseby in the Civil War, he commanded a privateering fleet 1649-52, until routed by Admiral Robert Blake, and, returning after the Restoration, was a distinguished admiral in the Dutch Wars. He founded the Hudson's Bay Company.
