1921- . English cleric, archbishop of
Canterbury from 1980, the first to be
appointed on the suggestion of the Church
Crown Appointments Commission (formed 1977)
rather than by political consultation. He
favoured ecclesiastical remarriage for the
divorced and the eventual introduction of the
ordination of women. He announced his
retirement in 1990.
