1756-1827. English painter and illustrator, a
caricaturist of Georgian social life. He
published the series of drawings Tour of Dr
Syntax in Search of the Picturesque 1809 and
its two sequels 1812-21. Rowlandson studied
at the Royal Academy schools and in Paris.
Impoverished by gambling, he turned from
portrait painting to caricature around 1780.
Other works include The Dance of Death
1815-16 and illustrations for the novelists
Smollett, Goldsmith, and Sterne.
