1927- . Russian cellist and conductor,
deprived of Soviet citizenship in 1978
because of his sympathies with political
dissidents. Prokofiev, Shostakovich,
Khachaturian, and Britten wrote pieces for
him. Since 1977 he has directed the National
Symphony Orchestra, Washington DC.
