1906-1977. Italian film director. His World War II trilogy of films, Roma citta aperta/Rome, Open City 1945, Paisa/Paisan 1946, and Germania anno zero/Germany Year Zero 1947 are considered landmarks in postwar European cinema. In 1949 he made Stromboli, followed by other films in which his wife Ingrid Bergman appeared. After their divorce he made General della Rovere 1959 and embarked on television work including a feature-length film for French TV La Prise de Pouvoir par Louis XIV/The Rise of Louis XIV 1966.
