1584-1643. English Parliamentarian, largely
responsible for the Petition of Right 1628.
As leader of the Puritan opposition in the
Long Parliament from 1640, he moved the
impeachment of Charles I's advisers Strafford
and Laud, drew up the Grand Remonstrance, and
was the chief of five members of Parliament
Charles I wanted arrested 1642. The five took
refuge in the City, from which they emerged
triumphant when the king left London.
