1758-1823. French Romantic painter. He became
drawing instructor and court painter to the
Emperor Napoleon's wives. After winning the
Prix de Rome 1784, Prud'hon visited Italy
but, unlike his contemporary David, he was
unaffected by the Neo-Classical vogue; his
style is indebted to Correggio.
