1733-1804. English chemist, who identified
oxygen 1774. A Unitarian minister, he was
elected Fellow of the Royal Society 1766. In
1791 his chapel and house in Birmingham were
sacked by a mob because of his support for
the French Revolution. In 1794 he emigrated
to the USA.
