1929- . US conductor and composer, born in
Berlin. After a period working as a composer
and arranger in the US film industry, he
concentrated on conducting. He was principal
conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra
1968-79. He was appointed music director of
Britain's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra 1985
(a post he relinquished the following year,
staying on as principal conductor), and of
the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 1986.
