1938- . British Labour Party politician, a member of the Kinnock shadow cabinet. A former merchant sailor and trade-union official, he became member of parliament for Hull East and, in 1975, a member of the European Parliament, despite being opposed to Britain's membership of the European Community. A strong parliamentary debater and television performer, he is sometimes critical of his colleagues. In 1988 he unsuccessfully challenged Roy Hattersley for the deputy leadership.
