1859-1924. US painter who created a
decorative watercolour style, using small
translucent pools of colour, inspired by the
Impressionists. He studied in Paris in the
1890s and was influenced by the Nabis
painters Bonnard and Vuillard. In 1898 he
visited Italy. His Umbrellas in the Rain,
Venice 1899 (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) is
typical.
