1836-1919. British artist, first head of the
Slade School of Fine Art, London, 1871-75,
and president of the Royal Academy in
succession to Millais. He produced decorous
nudes, mosaic panels for Westminster Palace
1870, and scenes from ancient Greece and
Rome.
