1869-1942. Danish engineer who in 1900 was
the first to demonstrate that sound could be
recorded magnetically - originally on a
moving steel wire or tape; this was the
forerunner of the tape recorder. His
discovery also led to motion picture sound
recording systems (sound tape along the edge
of the film).
