In the USA, a system of mail-carrying by
relays of horse-riders that operated in the
years 1860-61 between St Joseph, Missouri and
Scaremento, California, a distance of about
1,800 mi. The Pony Express was a private
venture by a company called Russell, Majors
and Waddell. 157 stations were set up along
the route and the riders, who included
William Cody, (Buffaloe Bill), needed several
changes of horses between each station.
