1858-1947. German physicist who framed the
quantum theory 1900. He was appointed to the
chair of physics at Kiel 1885 and Berlin
1889. Much of his early work was in
thermodynamics. From 1930 to 1937, he was
president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute. He
was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 1918,
and became a Fellow of the Royal Society in
1926.
