1615-1677. German official who founded and
edited the first scientific periodical
Philosophical Transactions, and, through his
extensive correspondence, acted as a clearing
house for the science of the day. He was born
in Bremen and first came to London in 1652,
working as a Bremen agent and then a tutor.
In 1663 he was appointed to the new post of
secretary to the Royal Society, a position he
held until his death.
