1929- . Namibian left-wing politician,
president from 1990, founder and leader of
SWAPO (the South-West Africa People's
Organization) from 1959. He was exiled in
1960 and controlled guerrillas from Angolan
bases until the first free elections were
held 1989, taking office early the following
year.
