1870-1902. US novelist. A naturalist writer,
he wrote McTeague 1899, about a brutish San
Francisco dentist and the love of gold. He
completed only two parts of his projected
trilogy, the Epic of Wheat: The Octopus 1901,
dealing with the struggles between wheat
farmers, and The Pit 1903, describing the
Chicago wheat exchange.
