1924- . US painter, associated with Abstract
Expressionism. In the 1950s and early 1960s
he painted targets, or concentric circles of
colour, in a clean, hard-edged style on
unprimed canvas. His work centred on
geometry, colour, and symmetry. His later
1960s paintings experimented with the
manipulation of colour vision and
afterimages, pioneering the field of op art.
Noland was born in Asheville, North Carolina.
In Graded Exposure 1967, he used large
stripes to form a plaid.
