1909-1983. Scottish-born US film actor. He went to Hollywood in the 1930s, where he made The Charge of the Light Brigade 1936, Bachelor Mother 1939, and Wuthering Heights 1939 before serving as a British officer in World War II. When he returned to Hollywood he starred in Around the World in Eighty Days 1956, Separate Tables 1958 (Academy Award), The Guns of Navarone 1961, and The Pink Panther 1964. He published two best-selling volumes of autobiography, The Moon's a Balloon 1972 and Bring on the Empty Horses 1975.
