1894-1982. English abstract artist. After early experiments influenced by Cubism and de Stijl (see Mondrian), Nicholson developed a style of geometrical reliefs, notably a series of white reliefs (from 1933). Born in Denham, Buckinghamshire, son of William Nicholson, he studied at the Slade School of Art, London, as well as in Europe and in California. He was awarded the Order of Merit 1968. He married the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.
