1900- . British biochemist and sinologist
known for his work on the history of Chinese
science. He worked first as a biochemist
concentrating mainly on problems in
embryology. In the 1930s he learnt Chinese
and began to collect material. The first
volume of his Science and Civilisation in
China was published in 1954 and by 1989
fifteen volumes had appeared.
