1808-1890. Scottish engineer and machine-tool
manufacturer, whose many inventions included
the steel hammer in 1839. At his factory near
Manchester, he developed the steam hammer for
making large steel forgings (the first of
which was the propeller shaft for Brunel's
steamship Great Britain).
