1831-1915. Scottish vice-admiral and explorer
who sailed to the Canadian Arctic on an
expedition in search of John Franklin 1852,
and again in 1876 when he discovered the
Challenger Mountains. During 1872-76 he
commanded the Challenger Expedition. His
Arctic explorations are recounted in Voyage
to the Polar Seas 1878.
