1866-1957. British scholar. Born in Sydney,
Australia, he was taken to England in 1877,
and was professor of Greek at Glasgow
University 1889-99 and at Oxford 1908-36.
Author of History of Ancient Greek Literature
1897, he became known for verse translations
of the Greek dramatists, such as Euripides,
that made the plays more accessible to
readers.
