1929- . German physicist who discovered in 1958 that in certain conditions a nucleus can be stimulated to emit very sharply defined beams of gamma rays. This became known as the Mossbauer effect. Such a beam was used in 1960 to provide the first laboratory test of Einstein's general theory of relativity. For his work on gamma rays Mossbauer shared the 1961 Nobel Prize for Physics with Robert Hofstadter.
