1557-1602. English composer. A student of
William Byrd, he became organist at St Paul's
Cathedral, London, and obtained a monopoly on
music printing. A composer of the English
madrigal school, he also wrote sacred music,
songs for Shakespeare's plays, and a musical
textbook.
