1761-1809. British general, born in Glasgow.
In 1808 he commanded the British army sent to
Portugal in the Peninsular War. After
advancing into Spain he had to retreat to
Corunna in the NW, and was killed in the
battle fought to cover the embarkation. He
entered the army in 1776, serving in the
American and French Revolutionary Wars and
against the Irish rebellion of 1798.
