1852-1933. Irish novelist, born in County
Mayo. He studied art in Paris 1870, and
published two volumes of poetry there. His
first novel, A Modern Lover 1883, was
sexually frank for its time and banned in
some quarters. It was followed by others,
including Esther Waters 1894.
