1874-1955. Portuguese neurologist, pioneer of
prefrontal leucotomy (surgical separation of
white fibres in the prefrontal lobe of the
brain) to treat schizophrenia and paranoia;
the treatment is today considered
questionable. He shared the 1949 Nobel Prize
for Medicine.
