1821-1906. Argentine president 1862-68. In
1852 he helped overthrow the dictatorial
regime of Juan Manuel de Rosas, and in 1861
he helped unify Argentina. Mitre encouraged
immigration and favoured growing commercial
links with Europe. He is seen as a symbol of
national unity.
