1765-1836. English potter. He first worked
under the potter Josiah Spode, but in 1789
established himself at Stoke-on-Trent as an
engraver of designs (he originated the
`willow pattern') and in the 1790s founded a
pottery there, producing high-quality bone
china, including tableware.
