1892-1975. Roman Catholic primate of Hungary.
He was imprisoned by the communist government
1949, but escaped 1956 to take refuge in the
US legation. The pope persuaded him to go
into exile in Austria 1971, and he was
`retired' when Hungary's relations with the
Vatican improved 1974.
