1941- . Serbian communist politician. A
leading figure in the Yugoslavian Communist
Party (LCY) in the republic of Serbia, he
became Serbian party chief and president in
1986 and campaigned to reintegrate Kosovo and
Vojvodina provinces into `greater Serbia'. He
was educated at Belgrade University and
rapidly rose through the ranks of the LCY in
his home republic of Serbia, helped by his
close political and business links to Ivan
Stambolic, his predecessor as local party
leader. Milosevic won popular support within
Serbia for his assertive nationalist stance,
encouraging street demonstrations in favour
of the reintegration of Kosovo and Vojvodina
autonomous provinces into the Serbian
republic.
