1929- . Soviet communist politician. He was
deputy chief of propaganda 1970-78, was in
charge of party relations with communist
countries 1986-88, and in 1988 was appointed
by the Soviet leader Gorbachev to succeed the
conservative Ligachev as head of ideology. He
adheres to a firm Leninist line.
