1920- . British biologist. He applied game
theory to animal behaviour, and developed the
concept of the ESS (evolutionarily stable
strategy) as a mathematical technique for
studying the evolution of behaviour. His
books include The Theory of Evolution 1958
and Evolution and the Theory of Games 1982.
