1882-1958. Australian explorer, born in
Britain, who reached the magnetic South Pole
on Shackleton's expedition of 1907-09. Mawson
led Antarctic expeditions 1911-14 and
1929-31. Australia's first permanent
Antarctic base was named after him. He was
professor of mineralogy at the University of
Adelaide 1920-1953.
