1850-1893. French author who established a
reputation with the short story `Boule de
Suif/Ball of Fat' 1880 and wrote some 300
short stories in all. His novels include Une
Vie/A Woman's Life 1883 and Bel-Ami 1885. He
was encouraged as a writer by Flaubert.
